Zoe Detsi is Associate Professor in the Department of American Literature and Culture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. She has been teaching and researching in the field of 18th – and 19th- century American culture, society, and political ideology with emphasis on early American drama. Her publications include a book titled Early American Women Dramatists (New York: Garland, 1998) as well as articles in New England Theater Journal, American Drama, American Studies, Prospects. She has also co-edited two collections of essays, The Flesh Made Text (New York: Peter Lang, 2007) and The Future of Flesh (New York: Palgrave/Macmillan, 2009).

Το μάθημα αποσκοπεί στο να μπορέσουν οι φοιτητές/τριες:

• Να εξοικειωθούν με τον ρόλο του θεάτρου σαν ένα ισχυρό πολιτικό και ιδεολογικό εργαλείο στην αμερικανική κοινωνία του 19ου αιώνα μέσω της μελέτης τόσο της αισθητικής όσο και της ιδεολογίας του μελοδράματος μέσα από θεατρικά έργα που περιστρέφονται γύρω από φλέγοντα θέματα της εποχής, όπως πολιτική προπαγάνδα και εθνική ταυτότητα, δουλεία, ο μύθος της αμερικανικής Δύσης, η θέση της γυναίκας, ταξικές και φυλετικές διακρίσεις.
• Να μελετήσουν το κοινωνικο-πολιτικό και πολιτιστικό πλαίσιο της εποχής που ανέδειξε το μελόδραμα.
• Να αναπτύξουν βασικές δεξιότητες μέσα από την ανάλυση κειμένων, τις γραπτές και προφορικές εργασίες .
• Να καλλιεργήσουν την κριτική τους ικανότητα μέσα από συγκρίσεις και παραλληλισμούς με τη σύγχρονη κοινωνία και την επίδραση του μελοδράματος (θεατρικό, τηλεοπτικό, κινηματογραφικό) στην ψυχολογία και νοοτροπία του ευρύτερου κοινού.
